The People’s Republic of China firmly rejected the detention of Venezuelan Alex Saab, and urged the United States to respect the rules governing international law.
In a press conference, the spokesman of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Zhao Lijian, stated that “the US has been playing a shameful role in the Venezuelan issue. It has constantly abused political and judicial maneuvers, including sanctions and extraditions for the purpose of meddling in Venezuela’s internal affairs.”
Lijian went on to note that this policy of harassment “affects regular international personnel exchanges and jeopardizes mutual trust and cooperation between countries,” for which “China firmly rejects it.”
Furthermore, the People’s Republic of China urged the United States to abandon this old practice and “heed the international community’s call for justice and abide by international law and the basic rules governing international relations.”
Businessman Alex Saab was arrested in Cape Verde at the request of the United States last June 12, 2020 while his plane was refueling on the island of Sal, and has been held hostage for more than a year in violation of the African nation’s Constitution and international law.
