Since the illegal detention of special envoy Alex Saab, countries such as Russia have condemned the injustices and human rights violations experienced by the ambassador by the government of Cape Verde.

During a press conference, the official made it clear that “the Islamic Republic of Iran strongly condemns any action that is contrary to the principles of international relations and hinders the activities of diplomats”.

Khatibzadeh referred that Alex Saab was on a diplomatic mission as a special envoy of the Venezuelan government; in order to bring medical and food products to the people of Venezuela. However, the United States intercepted his mission only for political reasons, enforcing its illegal and extraterritorial laws.

Iran condemned the current situation of Ambassador Alex Saab

The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Saeed Khatibzadeh, condemned the case of Venezuelan ambassador Alex Saab; and the attempt of the United States to extradite him considering him a prisoner of war.

Alex Saab was arrested last June 12, 2020 by Interpol, during a technical stopover at the Amilcar Cabral airport in Cape Verde. This action was originated by an arrest warrant issued by the United States when the diplomat was returning from Iran.

The Venezuelan government has demanded the release of the ambassador while other countries such as Russia have also joined this campaign. Even the Human Rights Committee of the United Nations (UN) pronounced itself this Tuesday on the illegal detention of the Venezuelan ambassador and asked to stop the extradition process.

The Cape Verdean Attorney General’s Office itself has admitted that there were a significant number of irregularities in the whole detention process.
According to some sources, no arrest warrant was presented at the time of his arrest. It even turned out, in a second step, that the Interpol red notice, since withdrawn, had only been issued after the arrest.

Defense of the ambassador Alex Saab has denounced that these actions reflect a cover-up of an illegal act against the ambassador and against Venezuela.
They also pointed out the treatment to which he has been subjected, unacceptable for any accused or human being, even more so when it is a foreign government in transit to a third country. The strict application of international law is therefore imperative.
