On Thursday, Venezuela demanded the government of Cape Verde to comply with a humanitarian measure in favor of diplomatic agent of Venezuela Alex Saab, ruled on December 2 by the Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas), which provides for permanent house arrest.

In this regard, the Venezuelan government issued a statement in which it refers that Saab has been arbitrarily detained in that nation since June 12, when the plane where he was traveling had to make a technical stop to continue its journey in search of food and medicines necessary for the Venezuelan people.

“Venezuela hopes that in these dates of reflection and family unity, the authorities of the State of Cape Verde abide by the ruling of the ECOWAS Court and dictate a humanitarian measure to guarantee the human rights of Special Ambassador Alex Saab,” Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza tweeted.

Humanitarian action for Alex Saab

Below is the full text of the communiqué:

The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela calls on the institutions of the State of the sister Republic of Cape Verde so that, considering the Christmas holidays, when humanity gathers as a family to celebrate life and ask for a future of peace and justice, the Venezuelan citizen Alex Nain Saab Morán, unjustly detained in that country since June 12, is granted a humanitarian measure that allows him to share with his loved ones in freedom, a condition that should never have been taken away from him.

The Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela reminds the public opinion that Mr. Saab, Special Envoy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela since 2018, whose functions consist of facilitating the procurement of supplies of medicines, food and other goods, in the face of the criminal blockade that the Trump administration has imposed on the entire Venezuelan society, was detained in Cape Verde at the request of Washington, taking advantage of a technical stopover of the aircraft that was transporting him, thus ignoring the inviolability of diplomatic immunity corresponding to his investiture as an ambassador .

From the moment of his arbitrary detention, all the procedural lapses established by the Cape Verdean justice system to reach a conclusion of the judicial process have expired, reason for which the Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), issued on December 2, 2020, a ruling for the granting of a humanitarian measure to Alex Saab, expressed as a measure of permanent house arrest. However, despite the fact that Cape Verde is a member of this African integration body and has accepted full membership of the Court, its institutions and authorities have not enforced the measure adopted by the ECOWAS Court. Moreover, the approval of the judgment of this integration body was approved unanimously, including the favorable vote of the Honorable Coboverdian Judge Januária Tavares Silva Moreira Costa.

There is no doubt that the detention of Special Ambassador Alex Saab is part of the obsessive siege campaign orchestrated by the agonizing outgoing U.S. government against Venezuela, with the aim of inflicting more suffering on the Venezuelan people and destabilizing its institutions and internal order.

Appealing to justice, humanity and the historical and fraternal relations between the two countries, the Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela expects the State of Cape Verde to abide by and duly comply with the decision of the ECOWAS Court of December 2, 2020 and to dictate a humanitarian measure that guarantees the protection of the human rights of the Special Envoy, whose health has been deteriorated and compromised during the development of this unjust process. There is no legal element that prevents Mr. Alex Saab from enjoying the arrival of the new year with his wife and children, victims of this perverse plot orchestrated from Washington.
